Altar preparation
The Elder altar is part of the fight. Do not treat it as a random forest clearing. Clean the area first so the boss fight does not merge with a greydwarf patrol, troll path, or night spawn wave.
- +Place a portal outside the arena, not directly beside the altar.
- +Cut sightline clutter only where it helps movement; the altar pillars are still your best cover.
- +Start in daytime with rested buff, repaired gear, and spare food near the portal.
Bow and fire plan
Fire arrows are the simple beginner answer because they let you damage The Elder while using pillars to break line of sight. The fight becomes much harder when you run out of arrows or stamina.
- +Bring more fire arrows than you think you need, especially if this is your first attempt.
- +Use stamina food such as Carrot Soup and Queen's Jam so dodging roots does not empty the bar.
- +Keep moving when roots spawn, then return to pillar cover instead of fighting roots in place.
After the kill
The Swamp Key is not an invitation to sprint into the first Swamp. Use the win to set up poison resistance, better food, and a safer crypt route before serious iron farming.
- +Store the Swamp Key safely and mark potential Swamp coastlines for later scouting.
- +Build cauldron and fermenter infrastructure if you skipped it before the fight.
- +Read the Swamp route before opening crypts so your first iron run has a portal and ship plan.
