The reason every crypt run matters
Scrap Iron is the foundation of Swamp progression. Every iron weapon, armor piece, and tool comes from smelting these muddy lumps. Mine more than you think you need — iron stays useful through Mountain and beyond, and a second Swamp trip is slower than mining thoroughly on the first.
- +Bring a full food stack, portal materials, and repair supplies before the first crypt run.
- +Mine every muddy scrap pile in the crypt — do not leave early with a partial haul.
- +Mark cleared crypts so future iron needs do not restart the same scouting loop.
Where to find Scrap Iron in Valheim
Muddy scrap piles inside Sunken Crypts in Swamp biomes. Crypts are locked behind the Swamp Key from The Elder. Each crypt typically yields 30–80 scrap iron depending on its size. Iron cannot travel through portals, so plan ship trips or cart routes before a serious mining session.
- +Sunken Crypts glow with green light at night — easy to spot while scouting from shore.
- +Bring a bronze pickaxe and extra torches for the first crypt runs.
- +Place a portal near the landing point so food, meads, and repairs can move quickly.
What does Scrap Iron make in Valheim?
Scrap Iron smelts into Iron, which unlocks Iron Mace (critical for Bonemass), Iron Shield, Banded Shield, Iron Armor, Stonecutter, and Iron Nails for the Longship. Prioritize Iron Mace before Bonemass — Bonemass is highly resistant to everything except blunt damage.
