How portals change the risk calculus

Portals transform Valheim from a punishing corpse-run game into a manageable logistics problem. A portal near the active front means any death costs at most 5 minutes, not 30. Build portal pairs before leaving base for any boss prep, crypt run, or silver mining trip.

• +Name portals clearly — 'swamp-crypt' vs 'swamp-base' matters when you are under pressure.
• +Always carry extra portal materials so emergency placements are possible mid-route.
• +Build a portal at the boss altar before the fight so recovery is immediate after a wipe.

What you need to build a portal

Portals require 20 Fine Wood, 10 Greydwarf Eyes, and 2 Surtling Cores. Ore and processed metals cannot travel through portals — this is a core design rule. Most other items including food, meads, and building materials pass through freely.

• +Fine Wood requires a bronze axe to cut birch or oak trees.
• +Surtling Cores are the bottleneck — loot Black Forest burial chambers to get the first set.
• +The ore portal restriction forces ship logistics for Swamp iron, Mountain silver, and Plains black metal.

Can you bring ore through portals in Valheim?

No. Copper, tin, iron, silver, black metal scrap, and other ores are portal-blocked. Smelted bars are also blocked. Use a Karve for early ore runs and a Longship for iron and later tiers. Portal back for food and repairs; sail back with the ore.
